I'm a big fan of WorldGroup. Their networking philosophy of a "net village" is
great. Instead of the current internet where everyone lives in one tightly
managed "city", the net village concept is like a bunch of small towns. You
have your users who reside at BBS. This is like a small town and you feel a
sense of community because you see the same users over and over again. Then,
you have "roads" like a modem, which is a, "a bumpy dirt road", or DSL ", which
is like a 4 lane highyway", that connects your BBS to other BBS communities.

Worldgroup was very innovative but I think part of their demise was due to the
lack web programming tools, during the time, like current HTML, databases, and
PHP/ASP. Also, Worldgroup focused on business revenue instead of revenue from
individuals. A BBS must be focused on individuals "hobbists" to make it, at
least initially IMO. This would be support for a simple blog, online store,
RSS feeds etc..

Take a look at this quote from wikipedia about Gcomm

"This release finally focused on an active html web-based community that could
have been a home run if the company had pursued it rather than the
client-server strategy three years earlier". wikipedia

Accoring to wiki, Gcomm went down before switching to a nice web based system.
They say it could of been a home run? I sit here to thinking WHY has nobody
picked up the ball and ran with this idea.. It's beyond me.. It is so obvious
that a simple well planned WEB/Telnet BBS would be a hit if the "philosophy"
and "direction" of the BBS software are in the right direction.

If there is any doubts think about this: The current internet infrastructure
has two fatal flaws where BBS infrastrucute is/or can be better

1. The current organization of the internet is horrible for supplying
individuals with the information they want. There is alot of information on
the internet but it is not at your doorstep, you must search for it. In
theory, you could configure a BBS in such a way that delivers information to
you, spam free, all the time. Wheather it's files, messages, books, etc..
Also, you must avoid advertisements and the like on the internet. I have yet
to get a spam message on VirtualNET :-b

2. Number two, The current organization of the internet favors large
organizations rather than individuals.

Looks like the cards are stacked already in favor for individuals to choose BBS
style internetworking rather than current web networking. Not to mention, A
BBS can take advantage of both at the same time while and can deny the former..

I wonder who's holding their copyrights since they went out of business? At
least I think they went out of business according to their wikipedia entry.
