Shows how much things have changed. yeah, I remember when Vnet had well over a 1000 independant systems. It was quite amazing for its time. On another note, I believe if the BBS internetworking model was updated to use modern technology, it would become a direct competitor and surpas the current internet model of internetworking. Just for the simple fact that the BBS model does not use search engines or care for net neutrality. Also, BBS's would virtually do away with mass mail systems like yahoo and hotmail if there were "mini-bbs" systems that could be set up in 10 minutes that had all basic computer services wrapped up into one program. In a sense, I believe every single computer in every single house should be running a type of "BBS" which hosts their web page "instead of myspace" e-mail "instead of yahoo", files "instead of sourceforge", and e-commerce software "instead of tucows" If a BBS was designed right, with the right philosophical theory, it could completely change the rules of the internet in favor of the individual.
