Mysterious monolith reappears on Green Lake island January 5, 2001, 07:30 AM SEATTLE - A group took responsibility Thursday for erecting a 9-foot monolith in Seattle's Magnuson Park, but members said they were surprised to see the sculpture at its new location. The activist organization Some People apparently put the monolith in Magnuson Park on New Year's Eve, but someone else moved it to Duck Island in the middle of Seattle's Green Lake, either Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Neighbors were not sure when the monolith was taken to the island, because thick clouds and fog enshrouded the area early Thursday morning. Members of Some People marched in the streets on New Year's Eve, and hoped their monolith would make its mark. "We were trying to help the human race evolve, and some other humans steal it," said member Caleb Williams. KING 5 News had received a cryptic e-mail tip from "Monolith 9000" early Thursday morning, which read: "The area is green, and a circle for all. The center is where, the monolith will next fall." The renegade sculpture, which resembles the shrieking black marker in Stanley Kubrick's movie, "2001: A Space Odyssey," first startled visitors at Magnuson Park on Monday. But workers who came to take a look at the monolith on Wednesday morning found only some burned candles and a rose. Park authorities have another concern. The Green Lake island is a bird sanctuary, and no one is supposed to even be trespassing there. Authorities are in the process of finding a permanent home for the monolith. Stay tuned. ĿĿĿĿֿ Ŀ Ŀ Ŀ Ŀ Ŀ Ŀ VADV 2.10 Ŀ Ĵ Kirkland, WA AspectNet@1425000 |
