Which two telnet clients have you tried?

First, don't use the Windows telnet.exe. It will do what you described above
with the "."'s in LORD. I've looked into this and can only guess that it's
VADV's comm routines doing that.

If you get the echoing, then turn off local echoing in your client. In mTelnet,
this is ALT-E. Generally you want to turn off local echoing for any BBS you
call since the BBS will do it. This should be negotiated between the BBS and
the client.
