A Word From Me -------------- When I first began to program scripts for the VBBS boards, I used the common method of hotkeys for my menus. All of the bulletin boards that I visited had this in common, mainly due to DOS. These routines that are contained in this archive is the latest versions I have written for my own personal use. I first wrote a lightbar menu in 1996 for the BBSList program. Since then that original code has taken a few modifications to make it faster and easier to use. Normally code like this, I would keep to myself for my own use or to fit it into the mainstream programs I have written. I am now not only giving my work out, but actually taking the time to write documentation and comments to explain how it works and how it can work for your BBS. VBBS development is dead. It now seems that the only modifications and progress that will be made on this dying software is through the main feature and backbone: VScript. I only wish that people would realize the power that is contained in this language. The entire BBS program revolves around it. Teamed up with the VString utility, there is not much you cannot do with the software. I am making all of my work open source, public domain software to help and encourage others to write once again. Sure, VBBS/VA will not have telnet abilities built-in. So what! There are programs that will do this. We have internet functionality with VISK (even though it really needs a revision). Yes you have to hang on to DOS.. not a Windows program, but are you hosting a BBS on your main computer while you are playing UT, or is it located on a second or third computer that you do not use anymore. Install Win98 along with a telnet program and let VBBS/VA run! I hear people complain about Windows and instability. Learn to operate your computer. Quit tinkering and messing it up. I have never had any of these problems that I hear described. It might have something to do with the fact that I know what settings in Windows I can change that does increase performance. I can have a new installation setup for maximum performance in minutes..then leave it alone! Quit opening strange attachments that come from unknown email or newsgroup. Get a good firewall program so no one will hack your computer. Argh.. sorry getting carried away here.. Just try VBBS again and relive the days. There are good Windows based BBS programs popping up now and I'm thankful that there are people still developing their software and haven't disappeared. The thing is.. when I log on to one of these Windows BBSs.. guess what? They look just like the DOS BBS programs of yesterday! VBBS does that too.. plus I can watch my users while they are online and see what they do! Call it an extra feature that Windows based BBSs don't have (or can't). I'm going to end this document here. I'll post this message on the website and the BBS because this came from my inside. Please use this code I have given to you. I have taken the time to make comments and I have even enclosed the VBBS version and the hard-to-follow VADV version. Again, if you have any questions or suggestions, comments or whatever, email me or something. Thanks. Steve Aspect Technologies Design BBS http://scribers.midwest.net/swinn telnet://at2k.dhs.org |
