Re: Sex Pistols music > I've been playing guitar for about 3 1/2 years. I'm 14. I don't really like > modern band, that is with in 4 or 5 years. Anyway, was there a huge > difference in the guitars/amps bakc then? I can play most of the old scool > punk songs(clash, pistols,Siouxie and the Banshees) but no matter how I play > it, w dstortion/flanger/chorus, and amp whatever, but It just don't sound > right! How do I get the sound? First of all: there's nothing wrong with having a sound distinctive to you and your setup, even when playing covers. I gave up trying to sound exactly like other bands. However I'm on an endless quest for a fatter distortion tone, shouldn't have gotten a Fender Amp I guess. Second: read up on "Performance Notes" or similar articles in _Guitar for the Practicing Musician_ or other magazines. Third: consider your type of amp, whether it is solid state, digital, or vacuum tube. That will drastically alter what neat noises you can get. Fourth: don't forget they (the pros) may have access to custom built amps, guitars, and such forth. They may or may not have been using stock power amps or cabs.
