As Godzilla ravaged the city, Black Fox shouted to Grand Wizard: BF#@> what i'm saying is this: I think that a guitarist who cant read sheet BF#@> music but calls himself a musician is not a musician, but a poser who BF#@> just wants to be able to say hes a guitarist and doesn't actually want BF#@> to BE a guitarist. I must take issue with this. I know quite a few excellent guitarists (as well as other musicians) who cannot read a note of music, but that does not negate their ability. They can still play well (some of them boggle my mind with not only thier skill, but their compositional ability), but they merely cannot put it on paper. I guess a good analogy would be the aural traditions of various cultures- the story telling is still there; it was just never written down. I am not saying that it is a bad thing to be able to read music- I think it is a very good ability to have- I just think that a person should not be written off as a musician merely because s/he has not mastered one aspect of it. That is sort of like saying a person cannot communicate at all just because s/he canot read. This is just not true- all it really says is that one medium has not been mastered. I encourage all musicians to learn to read music if they cannot already, but I am not going to discount their talents merely because of this shortcoming. If I did, I would be doing a GREAT injustice to many very competent musicians. NCLE LIP Ľ Cum Dignitate Otium ...
