Your last statement typifies the tenets of Napoleanic Law "Guilty until proven Innocent." The US system is supposed to be based on the idea that you are Innocent until proven GUILTY. Innocent implies that you have NO DUTY to prove you didn't do it, the burden of proof lies entirely with the prosecution.
