The National Rifle Association has published extensive commentary on this
subject.

You could probabally read their publications in the library.
Or you can call 800 information (1-800-555-1212) and get the NRA toll free
800 number.  Call the number you obtain and ask NRA to send you a
membership application.  For about $30 you can get a membership along with
their magazine.  You will find extensive commentary about deterent value
of a population of law abiding armed citizens.  The crooks arn't afraid of the
cops.  It takes too long for the cops to show once they are called.  What
deters the crooks is knowing there is some chance they may run into a law
abiding armed citizen.  Please note: anyone who is armed should have spent a
lot of time in trainning and be well versed in laws and relevant issues.
