[ Here are your words ] BY: ``Bud Long`` VirtualNET,- #1 AT 1314011 expect CD-ROMs to get cheaper as the 12X CD-ROM and DVD drives come out. RAM is expected to get as cheap as $5 per megabyte. Rumor has it that Intel w trying to play the market by having people upgrade to 16M of RAM or higher wi Windows 95. Intel's figures on the sales of Windows 95 was based on Data Quest's numbers which placed sales at 100+ Million copies in 1996, only 40 million copies of Windows 95 where sold (There are 350+ Million Windows users so Intel has put a surplus of memory chips on the market in the millions. Oth companies such as Siemens, NEC, TI, and Goldstar have done the same thing. Th result is that RAM got cheaper and these companies lost money. See, Windows 95 is good for something! [ This is my response ] First off Mr. Bud... Intel did not produce WIN95, Microsoft did. Secondly, memory will drop below $5.00 per meg before Xmas. Intel does not PRODUCE Memory SIMM chips, or have any influence on the market. The major factor in the memory price drops has been the easy production of high quantity's of EDO memory, which drove costs way down, and volume way up. This combined with a large contingent of U.S. Memory now available at substantially lower pricing forced a price war between the foreign importers and the US makers. The US makers will win this battle, as you can probably tell if you were currently buying quantities of memory(90% are now made in the US). We are winning a battle against the overseas marketer's, and it has created a windfall for the consumer. Get your facts straight. Also, regarding CDROM's. Expect CDROMS to become MORE expensive, since producers were losing money on the cheap 4x series, they have removed the 6x from the market so that they can concentrate on the 8x and above which still remain above their profit break-even line. Don't expect cdrom's to drop below $60 again anytime soon, as this product is tied to a price-point just like IDE Harddrives are tied to the $140 barrier. *****Merlin***** ================ Excaliber BBS VNET@1610025 VBBS Ver. 7.00.02 Supra 28.8V34 (610)488-0299 USR VEverything(488-9194) |
