I did work in local IT - I managed departments that ran the server infrastructure, desktop support, purchasing and service desk for 3,000 county employees. The attitudes extended way beyond IT to the customers that we supported. MP> I worked for one cabinet that dealt specifically with IT for the rest MP> of the state. My experiences there were not necessarily reflective of MP> what I said above. They had the lack of resources bit, but the "ground MP> troops" were often (but not always!) eager to engage. Management was MP> usually the obstacle... wanting to do what they wanted to do rather MP> than what the customer (another cabinet) had asked for. The other oddity of my situation I didn't mention - IT didn't have much of a budget per se. Most of their budget came from cross-charging for services. Run into a shortfall? It's time for a department refresh of 120 PCs. It all left a bad taste in my mouth, I'm used to using my skills to provide value to the people that work for me and the customers we support. ...
