I don't doubt that Canada told our government, but it did not become public
knowledge until civilians spotted it.  That makes me wonder how often it
happens.

Only after it had made its way all the way across the US.  :)

The Pentagon eventually confirmed that it was launched from mainland China,
so that is where it is from.  I am guessing it only got shot down, after
crossing the US, because the public knew about it.  Otherwise China may
have eventually gotten it back.

The Pentagon also says it was a spy balloon.  What would be ironic would be
if it really was some sort of weather balloon that was being tested to see
if it would make it all the way back to China after circling the globe.  I
doubt that is the case but it would be ironic.

I am sure it was reporting back plenty of data until the point where it got
shot down.
