Hydro is a great way to generate steady power.  Like many things, the initial
investment is on the high side but it ends up paying for itself long term.  

We have a hydro generation plant/dam about 10 miles up the road from where I
live.  It was build in 1926 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conowingo_Dam

If the stats are still correct, it can create 548 MWe which is a good bit of
power.  I have seen almost all the gates open before after major rains when they
have to let extra water out to avoid the levels getting too high.

It is one of my favorite places to ride up in that area over the dam.
