Actually laser in the blue end of the spectrum are higher in frequency, not
lower.  Perfecting a laser that could reach that frequency took years,
because the rest of the technology reached it's limits also...  As the years
go by they are pushing the frequencies lasers can reach higher and higher.
Lasers do have to be focused to do anything constructive with them, but that
is generally not a big deal.
