Spanish media is bent on Portraying Putin as a modern day Hitler who invades countries for no reason, so if he had any sort of support *anywhere*, it would not be reported. Most Russians I know don't like Putin. I think popularity is only important if you are a leader in a regular democracy: if elections are rigged you only need the support of the people who runs the State machinery for you.
