Dictaphone Typing on a Computer in the Narcotics Section of the Wichita Police Department In my face, dark terminal Cursor lightning white against dull screen Demanding attention incessantly in flashes. From my office down the hall I hear sexless voices rising in rationales To justify today for future trial. Behind me, Through jail-bar gray-rimmed south windows Once-futuristic glass harbors well-bred fiscal rapists Now a minaret for time of arrest. Confessions of criminal virgins drone in pillowed ears at end of shift. Gangbangers maintain innocence, prepared to sue for Rodney King. I prefer fiction. I'm not really sure, but I think I'm the only person I know who writes law enforcement poetry. |
