JDM#> Can anyone tell me what it generally cost to ride the InterNet.

I'm paying $30 per month for full-featured access.

JDM#> I've heard that it's free and all you pay is long distance charges.

The InterNet itself is free, but getting access to the "on-ramp"
will cost. There used to be a company in Ohio that provided free
access, but I think they now charge too.

JDM#> But, I've also heard there is a flat rate. I would like to join and

Many companies do charge a flat rate, such as the one I use (InterQuest).

JDM#> converse with more writers but don't want to invest in software
JDM#> packages that end up costing more then I would like to spend (in terms
JDM#> of montly fee's and various access charges).

Wise choice... :)

JDM#> So, if anyone can assist me with this I would greatly appreciate
 JDM#> it.

JDM#> P.S. Is the only way to access the InterNet VIA online services, e.g.
JDM#> America Online, Compuserve, etc., or is there a more dirct and less
 JDM#> costly route?

No, actually if all you need is E-mail and World Wide Web, then
Compuserve and America Online are probably the best. If you want
InterNet Relay Chat, Telnet, FTP and some other additional services
you are probably better off with someone who charges a flat rate
at no more than $40 per month. There are a number of companies
that will do it for you. I'm not sure where you are located, but
it's probably better that you use a local company to get local
phone charges. Local to Huntsville AL are InterQuest (the best),
Nuance, Traveller and HiWAAY (the worst). If you can't find any
companies local to you (yellow pages or business white pages),
either go to a local electronics trade fair or e-mail me and
I'll see if I can search for one.

Andy

PS = BTW, InterNet is not a selling point for Prodigy. I do not
recommend them.
