I did use slackware first on a DOS machine way back when. I think the distro was called zipslack. That got me used to using the unix commands. I have also installed debian on a couple of boxes with using x. If I am not using x, the configuration "by hand" does not bother me too much. The only thing I don't think I could get used to would be using a distro that did not have apt-get or something close to it. I have at times had to compile things from source but I really like to avoid it if I can.
