On my bbs everyone is blocked. until they are whitelisted.

those blocklists get huuuge because there's a lot of attackers every day.

in your case you might get a situation where all your nodes are tied up all day
long, or the attacks take up a lot of resources and make your bbs run like shit.
 then  you will need to protect.

I use windows firewall and peerblock, but I know they can only do so much.
