FWIW, restic also backs up stdin. So not sure on your process for backing up
drive images, or the OSes involved - but "cat device" pipe "restic" may be
another workable solution. (I use this to backup DBs from DB dumps).

Restic might not be the right tool for large drive images, but for small images,
it works well...
