Re: Convince me to run OS/2..... > OK, Next question.... My DX4/100 has 1 72 pin simm. Do I need to get another > 1 72 pinn 8 megger, or can I put anything in there? I think you could put anything in there- well, anything with 72 pins. A 4 meg SIM, for example, would be just fine- it doesn'tneed to be another 8. Maybe I misunderstood your question. > There are converters that wil allow you to use your 30 pin ram in a 72 > pin socket. I see these in the Computer Shopper all the time. I have one of these. It was necessary when I upgraded my motherboard, which had four 32-pin 1 meg simms; the new MB had only 72 pin slots. The converter works great... plug the four 32 pin simms into it, plug IT into a 72 pin slot. Just like plugging a 4 meg simm into one 72 pin slot on my motherboard. I also have a 4 meg simm in its own 72 pin slot, and an 8 meg simm in yet another. So yeah, you can mix memory "denominations". > I have heard conflicting arguments about having Windoze95 AND OS/2 on > the same system. Any truth to this? Since Windoze95 is an alledged operating > system, would I be able to run Windoze95 through OS/2 or need the dual boot > system? Also the 486DX-100 is a Plug-N-Play mother board. Will I have > problems with the add-ons? You wouldn't be able to run Win95 through OS/2, or vice versa (although you can run Windows 3.1 through OS/2 quite easily). You'd need to do the dual- boot thing. I've heard this is a bit tricky to get working, but I know it has been done. Which one do you install first? OS/2, I think, but I'm not sure. > One other person says that DesqView is a memory hog, but I haven't seen > too much of this. I do like the fact that a tape back-up can be run without > shutting down the BBS. Well, this is what I hear. This is one thing I cannot do anymore, which I was able to do when I was running strictly windows 3.1. My tape backup software won't run properly under OS/2- it seems to get stuck trying to read from the floppy drives and has trouble communicating with the tape drive. In order to get this to work, I'd have to buy an OS/2 version of some tape backup software; the cheapest I've found so far is about $70. For the time being, at least, I'll live with the inconvenience of shutting down and booting to MS-DOS to access my tapes. |
