I fit into both categories myself.

I signed such an agreement with my company, but it really only pertains to
anything I create that is in their line of work and could possibly become a
competitor product to them.  They could care less what I program otherwise.

High prices are due mostly to software pirating!  The rest of the fee is
required to pay programmers and other employees for all the time they got paid
for the development of the product.  If you want lower software prices in
general, then you should help fight software piracy.
