Have you guys looked over PCBoard's Coding Scheme?  Basically, they use
@VARIABLE@:xxxY type codes... where VARIABLE is any printout variable name
(like CALLERNAME, CREDITS, etc.) surrounded by @ symbols; :xxx indicates to
PCBoard to set aside xxx spaces (1 to 65 I believe it is) for the returned
VARIABLE to occupy, and Y is set to L for left hand justified, R for right
hand justified, and C for centered in the set aside space defined by xxx.
Works fantastic, it's easy to remember, and it's supported by THEDRAW and many
other ANSI editors out of the can!  I can get you the whole PCBoard litany if
you're interested.  I own it too.  I liked a LOT of things about PCBoard, but
just couldn't live with it's pitiful file / message area setup.  But this
system and the FILEID.DIZ, are PCBoard's greatest contributions to BBSdom
IMHO!
