VA 2.0 -- $17 now, more later, two paid updates in less than a year...

the following is a prepared statement by mjc
-------------------------------------------------------
Are RdG and GW Culling the Herd?

Looking at (as we are supposed to) the recent Net Guide sent
to all VBBS & VA Sysops by GW, I find the following to still
be a part of the REQUIREMENTS for updating the VNET Policy
(Network Guide).

lines 49-53
All information contained herein is subject to change as the Network grows
and changes. Any Policy changes will be announced on the VirtualNET Policy
Announcements Message Area. This Document will then be updated and
redistributed by the NC or ANC using Mass Mail with file attach to the
RC, AC, ALC staff.

lines 63-68
Update procedures for this file are as follows. When a Policy change
occurs VirtualNET's the NC or ANC will post an Official announcement in
VirtualNET's Official Message Area called "VirtualNET Policy Announcements".
At that time, The NC or ANC will also distribute this document to ALL
VirtualNET Officials, AC thru NC. The updated copy may also be sent to ALL
Sysops from time to time.

This is the last post to the aforementioned area...

Title: Official Change to the AreaFix Standards requirements !!!!
Date: Sat Feb 10, 1996 14:17:47

As of today VirtualNET's requirement for AreaFix type Email being
processed via VirtualNET has changed.

In addition to the existing AreaFix Standards, Roland DeGraaf's VMB
Standards are now acceptable in VirtualNET.

---------------------------------- sniped ----------------

It seems like the "how to distribute policy" was not
followed in this case either. The keyword(s) update and
upgrade produced the following: for update, the above
portion and little more; for upgrade, nada!

The keyword VBBS is never mentioned, it is as if it never
existed in VNET. Never does it state in the netguide that
you must upgrade from VBBS to VA. NEVER!

It does state that ONLY VA will be allowed in VNET.

It does say that VA named and the related disscussion bases
"Must Be Approved," it says nothing about VBBS bases however.
Does this mean RdG (and GW) do not require RdG's approval in
advance of the setup of those bases now?

lines 127-130

5) VA Registration is a Requirement of VirtualNET. SysOps are on a
probationary basis until such time as they register. Also, Virtual
Advanced is the Required software for inclusion in VirtualNET. Running
any other software subjects the Sysop to removal from VirtualNET.

lines 140-143

7) VirtualNET Technical Standards are propriatary and solely dependant on
Roland De Graaf's VNET.EXE networking software. Therefore, use of any
other tossing software or clone software is prohibited in VirtualNET
and is grounds from removal from the network without notice.

For those of us wishing to run VBBS under VA for ANY reason,
this could be a major problem. Even if we only use VBBS for
backward (inclusive) compatability with gated networks where
VA is not being used at all by starting a copy of VBBS in a
different directory and using it only for tossing into gated
subs from that network. After all, VNET v7.x & v8.x are a
part of VBBS and should qualify under the aforementioned
lines.

Searching for VNET now. Nothing that is not already shown,
in the above, that matters to this sysop / server system.

                        * * *

What exactly are the standards anyway? Does his DB format
use Jammer, Hudson, or what, can we use a QWK packet creator
other than his, a FIDO tosser other than his, can we even
use HIS correctly, flawlessly? Is this (making ALL systems
use VA) going to FIX the problems or just remove the more
vocal complainers and their abilities to voice those same
complaints.

I think the requirement for running VADV (VA) and the lack
of support in VFIDO (VFIDO - NM), VMB (VAREA - NM), and
other issues that have never been settled CORRECTLY, causes
this intended MANDATORY upgrade/update to be percived as "the
last thing seen by a busy bee as s/he is working to enrich
the hives supply of nectar and a tractor/trailer rig rushes
toward it's own destination, splat!" I feel the aims of the
net, and the aims of the sysop are not the same in this
regard. If this does not kill VNET and make a shambles of
other Type 1 (prior to VA) networks then the author is very
clearly failing in what seems to be his intent.

I see RdG as the author of two fine program suites, one of
which he is not wishing to support anymore and the other
which is unsupportable by third parties due to the author's
wishes to "do it myself." We as sysops are between a rock
and a hard place...

Q: How do you shell nuts?
A: Place them between a rock and a hard place. Apply Pressure.

We are nuts (ask anyone who runs a BBS of any type)

I see this as a way for him to finally regain control of
unregistered VBBS copies, regain monies he feels he is owed
for those copies, and a clean break for an sysop that wishes
to leave VNET.

We have our orders, Let's Lead, Follow or Get Out Of The Way!

Let's not take the time to talk about it any more, there are
only 7 weeks left and counting till VA ONLY Day.

I for one WILL change over, it is not with an easy mind that
I do so though. I feel like a gun is being pressed to my
head, and while we always have a choice (really, you do, even
with a gun pressed to your head) I feel that the trigger is
being squeezed, very slowly, even as I comply with these ORDERS
from on high.
