                  Sportster Supervisory Update Information

My Sportster stops sending data from time to time:

We've received reports from owners of Sportster V.34 modems manufactured
after March, 1996 concerning an intermittent timing condition that occurs
when the modems are being used in a terminal data transmission mode. Our
testing indicates this is a fairly isolated occurrence. The condition
appears to occur only when the modems are being used to interactively
transmit text typed from the keyboard (such as chatting). The modem may
pause during this type of data transmission. Standard data transfers, using
common transfer protocols such as Zmodem, FTP, and HTTP are not affected.
Our engineers have isolated the condition and determined a software
resolution. We've created an exchange program and chip replacement program
that will resolve the problem for those Sportster owners who experience it.

Products potentially effected:

00083901 Sportster 33,600 V.34 Plug and Play with V.42 bis and Fax
00083902 Sportster 33,600 V.34 Plug and Play with V.42 bis and Fax
00084001 Sportster 33,600 V.34 PC Plug and Play with V.42 bis and Fax
00084002 Sportster 33,600 V.34 PC Plug and Play with V.42 bis and Fax

00126501 Sportster 33,600 V.34 Mac & Fax with V.42 bis

We currently have updates for almost all products effected by this issue.
The only product which we do not have an update or exchange plan for is the
model 1141 (Sportster Voice for Macintosh) modem.U.S. Robotics is working
toward a resolution for this model. As always, monitor our many online
presences (including AOL, Compuserve, www.usr.com) for updates and
availability of this and other upgrades and maintenance releases. You also
may subscribe to our NEW Update Mailing List which will automatically send
you information on updates as soon as they are released (This can be done
by sending a message to support@usr.com with "005" in the subject line).

Current Work Around and Update Procedure:

To resolve this problem set S12=0. If you still experience the problem
fillout the SRO request form to receive a chip update or establish a product
swap. Product swaps will be reshipped, upon receipt, within 24 hours
utilizing 2-day shipping. Want to be sure your Sportster modem has current
code? The following chart is a listing of current Supervisor or EPROM dates
for our modems. The chart includes the model number, short description, and
the current supervisor or EPROM date of your modem. The Supervisor or EPROM
Date can be obtained by typing an ATI7 <enter> while in terminal mode of a
communications program. ( Examples of programs which have a terminal mode
are QuickLink, Qmodem, Telix, Windows Terminal, Windows 95 Hyperterminal
and ProComm Plus ) A sample output is shown below.

ATI7 Configuration Profile...

The Serial Number can be found on the bottom of the bar code label. The
number is generally 16 digits and starts with 000. (Ex:0008390012345678).
The bar code label is available in 2 places. The first location is on the
end flap of the modem box. The second location depends on whether you have
an internal or external modem. If the modem is internal the barcode will be
on the printed circuit board. If the modem is external the barcode will be
on the bottom of the modem. The 7 digit hyphenated number is NOT the serial
number. Example: CJE-0268 is NOT the serial number.

847-982-5092 and entering SPV34 at the main menu command. Please have
your shipping and credit card information available.
** - This modem can be upgraded to 33,600 by calling our BBS at 847-982-5092,
     and downloading the file DSVD-SDL.EXE.
X - These modems can be updated with 5/17/96 firmware. These units will have
to be updated by our Repair Facilities.

In order to obtain the latest firmware revision the modem please provide the
information requested above in the SRO Request Form. Send the form to any of
the above listed service contact points. Upon receipt we will reply back to
you with an SRO # and shipping instructions.

SPECIAL NOTE: Some products do NOT have SOCKETED EPROM's, therefore the
modem will need to be updated by our Repair Facilities. To check if your
modem has a SOCKETED EPROM do the following: Look on the modem, specifically
the PC board, for a SQUARE BROWN socketcontaining a small square chip. This
chip normally contains the modem Supervisor/EPROM date (seen in the ATI7
screen output) on a label which is on the chip. If you only see SOLDERED
chips, then the modem WILL have to be updated by our Repair Facilities.

Internal modem: You must remove the modem from the CPU (Unless the modem
is visible). Be sure to have the computer and all peripherals turned off
before doing this and to take proper electro-static grounding precautions.

External modem: You must remove the two screws holding the cover together.
Again, avoid contact with components and take proper electro-static grounding
precautions when inspecting both internal and external modem. Unsure if the
modem has a SOLDERED or SOCKETED EPROM? You may want to have a U.S. Robotics
Customer Service Representative confirm what type of chip your product has
and the update method necessary.
