Message   Diamond Dave    All   Death of Virtualnet?? Comments please   February 7, 1997
 4:52 PM

I was on the phone (voice) with Roland today (Feb 7, 1997) - the author of
this software that we run.

In the course of conversation, he said that in the near future he will not be
a hub for Virtualnet. He said that there are very few boards left on
Virtualnet and most people get their message subs from the Internet. He also
will be shutting down the "web server" for Virtualnet packets as well.

In addition, he said that V-net mail was always tossing on his system and he
wanted it moved somewhere else. When asked who would take over, he said he
didn't know - he just wanted it off his machine!

I know that Gene Wells is the admin for the message subs on V-net, but I
still considered Roland to be the head node on Vnet.

But - I think Roland's committing "political suicide" as it were. If he will
not be supporting "the" network of VBBS/VADV - who would want to join? I
understand that he does not want the message traffic to go through his system,
but he should at least be the hub for the RCs and maybe a few ACs.

BBSes in general are taking a nosedive with the competition of the Internet.
VADV has really taken a beating by all the bad mouthing going on. None of this
will do any good to the future of VADV. Dropping Virtualnet is another coffin
nail on the coffin that this may fall into.

I would like Gene Wells to comment on this - as well as anyone else out there
who's reading this. In the 3 1/2 years I've been running my board - this is
the first time I seriously thought of shutting it down. Without the support of
the author - it leave very little incentive to keep running it. yes, I know
its just V-net - as he just came out with ver 2.10 of VADV. But - I still
think Roland's shooting himself in the foot.

Or - do you think he's trying to get rid of V-net for other reasons? I know
that some people bad mouthed him rather severely on V-net and maybe he's
trying to "break up the union" as it were.

Questions? Comments? Please post them here and not in E-mail. I want everyone
to comment on this.

I like Virtual Advanced and I like Virtualnet. Please help it survive!!!!
