It is funny you mention that.

On laptops I use a Window manager that has no taskbar at all. You invoke
windows via shortcuts. But then, when you use a tiling window manager you
usually don  have to hunt around trying to find out where your window is.

I use stacking window managers on workstations, but I am considering switching
to a taskbarless setup for those too.
