On 24 Mar 17 07:55:56, Shawn Highfield said the following to Nick Andre: SH> I switch back and forth. The dos BBS is run on a windows XP vm and SH> has been for years. THe current host OS is windows 10, but it needs a lot SH> of TLC and I just don't feel like doing it so it's just running until it SH> dies. (The VM is backed up daily so the BBS would only be down as long SH> as it takes to install a new OS and virtualbox) I'm a huge fan of Virtualbox. What I'd LOVE to see is someone writing a fully functional virtual modem, that would use VOIP telephone service. If someone were able to do that, I can virtualize the entire BBS and move it to a cloud VPS and effectively shut down a noisy server, eliminate some costs, etc. SH> I do like Libreoffice more then Microsoft office, but I'm not a power use SH> I use the spreadsheet (Calc) for all of my business work, but it's pretty SH> simple math for me. Same here, unfortunately, I support people who require the advanced functionality of Office... SH> I'd never try to convince anyone to switch. At the office I did replace SH> windows 7 with fedora for the distpachers but again they only use a web SH> browser (our dispatch software is web based) and libreoffice. It saves me SH> HOURS of hassle. Since I switched them to fedora (8 months ago) I haven't SH> had to do anything. WHen they had a windows desktop they always had it SH> loaded with virus because they download every single slot machine and bingo SH> game they could find. I agree and think that theres ignorance on both sides. You have the Windows crowd thumbing their nose up at Linux for the Desktop, because it cannot do the most trivial of things without "quirks"; or able to do things so seamlessly that Windows can.... MacOS maybe the exception. You have the Linux crowd who just chants "switch to Linux" whenever a Windows person has a problem; without really understanding that person's environment or their needs. My BBS will always remain on Windows... or at least until ReactOS is stable. Nick --- Renegade vY2Ka2 * Origin: Joey, do you like movies about gladiators? (618:500/24) |
