On 22 Mar 17 22:07:00, Kevin Nunn said the following to Nick Andre: KN> If possible I'll keep running for my junk for awhile. Mystic BBS on a KN> Pi, those are cheap enough to replace as needed. And the OS/2 BBS is in KN> a VM right now, but I just got a ThinkPad that I'll be moving it to KN> fairly soon. And Thinkpads are a dime a dozen on Ebay, so that's KN> maintainable as well. Oh I know, I see them all the time for sale there, and locally here there are at least two or three computer "chop shops" that have them on the pallets, many dozens if not hundreds of them. KN> I still use Windows and Chromebooks day to day. I would happily run KN> OS/2 for it all, but it's not keeping up with the rest of the OS world. KN> I like linux, but it is lacking in the software realm as well - at KN> least for me (gaming, emulation, etc) I want to like Linux. I really do. But from first hand experience with several different distros its nowhere close to being "desktop ready". Nice and pretty GUI but anything outside of basic functionality you need to open a terminal. And yes I agree totally, Linux lacks decent software. It seems that it suffers tremendously from freebie products that are half-assed and/or abandonware. For example, I tried the latest Fedora. It can't even connect to a PPTP VPN... like seriously, Wtf... You need to mess around and install several things with Apt and program the Linux firewall just to allow an OUTBOUND session on VPN. On Windows this is seamless and mickey mouse. On Linux, its a challenge. Same thing with network printing, accessing Windows shares, RDP, etc... I just find a lot of things to be so incredibly half-baked, half-finished on Linux. When I see the legions of Linux fanboys on various forums trying to convince long-time Windows users to switch over, its cringeworthy. If someone really wants a decent "non-Windows" experience... buy a Mac. I'm just not ready to trust Linux to run a DOS BBS that has been up since '94 and is now one of the last remaining systems in the world running Renegade... if people try to call and its down for whatever reason, it just looks bad.
