This file is issue 2 and was updated on 2/10/95. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Background Information (SD 48315.6) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The fourth incarnation of the Star Trek legend, Voyager features an entirely new cast of fasinating characters, and a brand new ship, exotic new aliens and a previously uneplored quadrant of the galaxy. Captain Kate Janeway and her crew have just taken command of the newest and most advanced ship in Starfleet: the Intrepid Class Starship U.S.S Voyager; Their mission: to track down a ship of Maquis rebels whose last known co-ordinates were in an area of plasma storms known as the Badlands. On board the renegades' ship was Janeway's Tactical / Security officer, Tuvok, undercover on an intelligence gathering mission. Whilst exploring the last known position of the renegade ship, the Voyager is mysteriously propelled 70,000 light years from home by an overwhelming force. Even if they travel at maximum wrap spped it will take them 75 years to reach Federation Space. Only by working together with the Maquis, do they stand any chance of finding their way home. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Crew ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Captain Janeway, Kathryn (Human - Commanding Officer) ----------------------------------------------------- Kathryn Janeway graduated from Starfleet Academy and has steadfastly worked her way up through the ranks to become captain of a starship. She served as Science Officer aboard the U.S.S. Al-Batani, during the Arias expedition, where she learned much from the then Captain Paris. The fact that she was present on this mission states that she is an impressive officer as Paris has a reputation for choosing only the best. Now in command of the U.S.S. Voyager, it is Captain Janeway's mission to track down the Maquis. In order to accomplish this she will take cashiered Starfleet Officer Tom Paris, the son of her former captain, as an observer. Janeway's strength of character makes her the ideal choice for this mission. It also ensures that she will be well equipped to deal with whatever the ship encounters along the way. Chakotay (Human - First Officer) -------------------------------- A native American who resigned his Starfleet commision to join the Maquis rebels. He hails from Dorvan Five, which was one of the first worlds to be handed over to the Cardassians upon the Federation's compliance with the controverisal agreement concerning borders. He decided to fight for his home world and joined the Maquis. Lt Tuvok (Vulcan - Tractical / Security) ---------------------------------------- Tuvok has served under Captain Kathryn Janeway for four years as her tactical/security officer, including a period undercover, when he infiltrated the Maquis. His Vulcan logic renders him an excellent tactician and, combined with his high intelligence, provides him with unparalleled powers of deduction. His Vulcan apporach to problems can sometimes cause him to be overly pedanic in his explanations! Nonetheless, his Captain has come to depend upon his steadfast nature and sound advice. True to his Vulcan nature, his demeanour remains composed, no matter how disastrous or disappointing the situation becomes for the U.S.S. Voyager and her crew. Thus his presence has a calming effect on his fellow offices.f Lt Tom Paris (Human - Conn Officer) ----------------------------------- Tom Paris, a graduate of the Academy, was an officer with a brillant career ahead of him but his life took a dramatic wrong turn when he accidentally caused the death of some fellow officers. Compounding his difficulties, Paris then falsified reports before his nagging conscience finally forced him to confess. Cashiered from Starfleet, Paris then joined the Maquis but was captured on his first mission. Lt B'Elanna Torres (Half Human, Half Klingon - Chief of Engineering) -------------------------------------------------------------------- B'Elanna Torres began her career with an encouraging start at Starfleet Academy. One of her tutors, Professor Chapman, regarded her as one of the most promising students he had ever taught. Despite her talents, Torres' days at the Academy were cut short. After four disciplinary hearings and a suspension, she finally left before completing her second year. In civilian life she carved a niche for herself in the Maquis. Her Klingon half handicaps her with a temper she has great difficulty in controlling. When enraged, she finds it impossible to anticipate the consequences of her actions. However, she is gifted with a natural aptitude for engineering, with a clear headed ability to solve technical problems. Were she able to curb her ferocity, she has the ability to excel in her field. Ensign Harry Kim (Human - Ops/Communications Officer) ----------------------------------------------------- Harry Kim is an extremely enthusiastic young man from a close Asain Family. He sets himself very high standards and is determined to be an exemplary Starfleet Officer. Voyager is his first assignment since his graduation from the Academy. His position as Ops. Officer reflects his academic success and his ability to analyse and solve problems He has faced the situation of being stranded in the Delta Quadrant, so far from home, with strength of character and courage beyond his years. He is earnest and very eager to please. Holographic Doctor ------------------ As only an emergency holographic supplement to the medical staff, the doctor was not programmed to function as a Chief Medical Officer. However, due to the loss of the U.S.S. Voyager's entire medical personnel, he has had to fill this role. Designed and programmed with information from 2000 medical reference sources, the hologram contains the personal experience of forty seven individual medical officers. The Doctor is proving himself to be an extremely capable and efficient officer. Kes is being thrained by him to be his assistant and she, in turn, is helping him to develop social skills and to gain a further understanding of human nature. Neelix (Talaxian - Adviser/Chef) -------------------------------- Neelix is non-Starfleet personnel. He is a former junk dealer who gained a free passage on the U.S.S. Voyager by offering himself as an adviser, guide and diplomat, based on his knowledge of the Delta Quadrant and its races. Trading is a way of life which he has mastered. When he discovers the ship is short of energy for the replicators and, therefore food, he offers his prowess as a chef. The Talaxian is very personable, to the point of charming but is also shrewed and has a talent for turing situations to his advantage. His flamboyant clothes give a clue to his personality and his enjoyment of life. His quick-wittedness should prove to be an advantage to the crew of the Voyager. Kes (Ocampa - Nurse) -------------------- Kes is another alien indigenous to the Delta Quadrant. Shw is a member of the Ocampa race. Her gentle ways and inquiring mind make her a prefect complement to the U.S.S. Voyager's crew where she trains as a nurse. Kes shares a loving relationship with Neelix and they make an unlikely but, nonetheless, endearing couple. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Ship ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Name : U.S.S. Voyager Class : Intrepid Registration : NCC 74656 Crew Comp. : 141 Cruise Speed : Warp 9.975 The U.S.S. Voyager is the latest, most impressive starship in Starfleet. She carries a crew of 141 but has provision for almost sixty most. The bridge is the command nerve centre of the ship where Captain Janeway leads her starship. She occupies the centre seat surrounded by the senior officers at their bridge stations. U.S.S. Voyager is just one of the Intrepid Class starship which are designed to be smaller but faster than the Galaxy class starships such as the late U.S.S. Enterprise-D. U.S.S. Voyager is also the test bed for a new type of computer memory. Bio-neural gel packs have replaced some of the traditional circuitry and allow information to be sotred and processed more efficiently. Engineering is the heart of the starship and all the energy needed by the warp drive is generated in the matter-antimatter collision chambers. The energy is then focused by the use of dilithium crystals and channelled to the warp drive. The U.S.S. Voyager's warp drive is of a totally new design. It has been altered to stop the damage which traditional drives cause to the sub-space continuum. In fact, the drives have been up-graded as well so that the ship is capable of a sustainable cruise velocity of 9.975 factors of warp. The ship was designed as an independant operator and, as such, carries three years worth of fuel. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Races ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Kazon --------- The Kazon are the first group of aliens encountered by the U.S.S. Voyager in the Delta Quadrant. They are an aggressive, humanoid race of space faring plunderers who have become one of the leading powers in the region. Water is a highly prized commodity here and the Kazon will do everything possiable to take possession of any they find. The Ocampa ---------- The Ocampa are a peaceful race of subterranean people whose individual lifespans are less than a human decade. Ancient rumours suggest that they once had highly developed paranormal capabilities which have now lapsed through lack of use. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Story So Far ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1.
