SM#@>For those interested in Starfleet Battles (what it is), I will do my best
SM#@>give a short description. It is a strategy game where you can control a
SM#@>ship, more than one ship, or even a fleet. Basically, you add how many
SM#@>unused engine boxes you have left (and other power supplying goodies) and
SM#@>that power into all sorts of different things. Shields, life support,
SM#@>weapons, movement, tractor beams, transporters, ecm/eccm, and the list goe
SM#@>on. There are ships from fighters to carriers to dreadnoughts. Ship
SM#@>seperation is possible on a few. Over 7 races are presented and each is
SM#@>unique in weapons, shields, and other things. There are unlimited
SM#@>possibilities in strategy and combat. Also, there are over 500 different
SM#@>ships available to use (not sure of the exact number, but I have 3 3in
SM#@>binders full of SSd's). This game is the only way to get a feel of how it
SM#@>would be to command a starship in battle. All the other games I have play
SM#@>(video) do not even come close to this game (by the way it's a board game)
SM#@>Someday, I hope IBM brings out SFB to life on the computer. It would be a
              ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
SM#@>best seller.
     ^^^^^^^^^^^
IBM would proably screw it up; Microprose, or SSI could proably do a
good job of it <g>. Untill then however, there is VGA Planets, only
the best multi-player computer based strategy game ever.

On the VGA Planets support net (fido net 57) someone made refference
of building a VGAP senerio to emulate StarFleet battles. I'm not
sure if it is done yet though.

If you have not played VGAP (as it is called by insides) you should
pickup the unregistored evulation copy from a local bbs (scan file
discription for "planets", or "VGAP". The ogrinal file name was
VGAP300.zip (about 800k); I think the updated file is VGAP 315.zip
(about 1.4 meg- includes utilies, and cplayer IA).

This game allows 11 players to command a different space faring
empire, each with it's own special ablies, and weaknesses, in a bid
for total domination of the echo cluster.

With 20,000 register copies around the world there is plenty of
copition to be had. Thre is proably a bbs host near you.

Infact, earlier this year Sharenet BBS in California established a
auther santioned international tourament of champains. I personaly
have already finshed one tourney game, and am ranked 22nd in the
world (the fact that there is a 20 way tie for the tie is in
material <g>;). I am current in another game, if I win this game my
ranking would jump to the 5-8th seat (depening on how other games
    underway end).

Many VGAPers are have SFB exerence; but, left the game do to
increasingly aniquated rules, and over sized manuals. Some even
complained that it takes 2+ hours of number cruching to design a
desent ship (actial that is something I would proable get into).
