I don't know if the > Gem-hadar were based anywhere. It /c I can think of at least two possible citation from TNG that would support the claim that the Federation does indeed use small onperson fighter type craft on at least in-syst missions. The TNG episode (I don't recall the title), wherein Wesley Crusher faces a cadet review board investigating the death of a fellow cadet, the plot revolved around a training mission conducted in single-seat craft. Although technically not "fighters" these could be the equivalent of our T-38 jet trainer (Also used by NASA as chase planes & astronaut transportation) which is a non-combat version of the F-5. Iaddition, in the visual showing the Borg cubeship passinMars incoming to earth in the season two-parter (Geez, I guess I flunk for not knowing THIS episode title either!), two small fighter-type craft (at least that's how they appeared) are destroyed. Although these may have been automated (it is never ecified), they could certainly be of a similar design as the above citation. Clearly the Jem-Hadar, The Defiant and even the Maquis ships we've seen up to now are considerably larger than single-seaters. Therefore it does not appear correct usage to refer to them as "fighters." Actually I would prefer a more naval-like classification such as Patrol/Attack craft. |
