 I really don't think you can base what a fighter is on size or how it is
 armed (A modern fighter is as big as a WWII bomber and much more powerful).
 You are right about a fighter being based somewhere.  I don't know if the
 Gem-hadar were based anywhere.
 Note that I've always thought of the Defiant as more of a fighter than a
 starship (although you really can't classify it as such)  It does have some

Dis looks like an interstin` discussion to jump into..if nobody minds.
Ah use ta belong to a Star Trek Fan Club (No, not THE STAR TREK FAN CLUB),
but, anyway, m`ah character served aboard an Avenger Class Heavy
Frigate..(That equates to the U.S.S. Reliant design from ST II TWOC). We had
several classes of ship operatin` within the Club, Dreadnaughts, Heavy
Frigates, `n yes we(That is m`ah ship) operated fighters...one man Killer
Bee`s.
Now fighters generally aren`t part of Star Trek, at least as far as the
movies go, and the TV Series...however if you get deeper into the
sub-culture, one begins to find all sorts of ship classifications...fighters
bein` one of them. They are based aboard larger ship types, and do not
usually operate independently of their mother-ships.
