And I wonder why?

"Hmm," says Berman. "Ratings are slipping, boys. Guess it's time to dredge up
the ol' Klingon/Federation thing again. That's always good for a few ratings
points."

Consider:

Why would the Federation back the Cardassians? They have no formal alliance
with them.
Why would the Feds so openly oppose the Klingons? Do they want war with both
the Dominion and the Empire?
What about the Romulans? With the Feds at war with the Klingons, it's the
perfect time for the Romulans to attack.

In any sort of reality-based storyline, a move like that on the part of the
Federation would have disastrous consequences. It's certainly fortunate that
the ST writers are barely capable of mediocre fiction, much less anything
beyond that, because otherwise the Feds could find themselves in a lot of
trouble right now.
