It's usually made by one company and you have to pay a premium price to replace it. IBM, Packard Bell, Acer, and Compaq are famous for this. Was going to replace my mother-in-law's MB in her Packard bell with a 486-25 (she spilled something on it and sharted it out)...they wanted almost $400 for it!!!!! You can buy a standard one with the 486/25 processor for around $80 now. If you do get a propreitary system, make sure it has a 3 year warranty and be prepared to look for special upgrade parts. JC |
