You are either a Fender person or a Gibson person, those are the two basic
tones. At first I didn't like the Fender sound when I was a kid, but the tone
is the thing. I had and old dot neck 335 with the PU 90 pickups on it. I have
sold most of my guitars over the years. I still have a 1961 strat with an ash
body and clear natural (baseball bat) finish that I've had for over 30 years
now. For a bass, you wouldn't like a Gibson, they are too neck heavy. If you
have the bucks, a boutique bass is the way to go, preferably with a neck
through the body for stability. If I bought a new guitar, it would definitely
be a Paul Reed Smith. I went to St. Mary's College of Maryland with Paul
Smith, he built his first guitar for an independant study project and got
graded for it. He used to have a repair shop in Annapolis MD and he refretted
my Stratocaster. He has since moved his shop / factor to Kent island on
Maryland's Eastern Shore.

I have an interesting amp. I did have an old twin but sold it many years ago.
I still have a 1976 Peavy Mace, which has 6 6l6GC tubes and two independant
channels. I have replaced the crunchy pots and have Sovtec tubes in it as
well as two Carvin bass 12" speakers which take 400 watts each. It was the
only way I could keep from blowing speakers. I have an old Marshall 4X12 cab
with Electrovoice speakers for an extension. It is painfully loud.
Unfortunately I need a bass rig. I'm thinking of doing all rack mount stuff
i.e., preamp, poweramp, tuner, compressor etc. I have a guitar POD which is
great on the bass too, the chorus is nice.

I love my toys :)
