It was used to reroute disk reads and writes to a directory instead.

It has been left out of DOS 6+ because inept use gives Windows fits.

You can get it and the other programs left out of MS-DOS 6+ by ordering
the MS-DOS 6 Supplemental Kit from Microsoft.  The programs are free to
DOS 6 owners; the cost covers the disk and shipping.
