That was back when programmers had to hand optimize everything, usually for 
memory usage and/or disk space usage.  Speed of execution was a secondary 
consideration, due to the price of memory and hard disk space.  I still 
remember the days of archiving BBS files on floppy disks to make room for new 
ones on the hard drives.
