In the USA the Medicare  number (for many years) was the same as the SSN.
The Medicare number recently was changed to an entirely different sequence.

Still, when I go get some Lab Work at the hospital Registration personnel will
still ask for the SSN and the Medicare number.
I asked why and the lady didn't know why it was still needed.
